Next Meeting May 16th at Nancy's

Thank you Gerry and Marie for hosting our last meeting. As always, the dinner was wonderful and the evening full of friendship and interesting discussion. Nancy will be hosting our next gathering, which will be Monday, May 16th at 5:30pm. Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

Dinner at Claudia's and Next Month's Plan

The Hummingbird's Daughter, by Luis Alberto Urrea was rated 4.63 at our last meeting. Thank you Claudia for a wonderful Mexican dinner, and to all of you for interesting conversation. I feel so fortunate that we have such a congenial yet diverse and outspoken book club group. I think it is such a great opportunity for growth. I certainly feel challenged to read with more awareness in order to be able to express my reaction to the books we read. After finishing The Hummingbird's Daughter, I decided to read another book by Urrea - his nonfiction The Devil's Highway.

Our next book, chosen by Claudia has arrived. It is The Help, by Kathryn Stockett. Please stop by the library or let me know if you need to have it mailed to you. We planned our next meeting to happen at Gerry's house, on Monday, April 11. I will let Annette know.

Hi All,

Megan Webster ( who lives upriver at about 12 miles) asked me to let everyone know that she has eggs for sale again! The chickens are back laying lots and lots, and you can drive up to her place for the best eggs you'll find anywhere, and for a VERY good price.

On to the next book!

It was so much fun to have all of you over for dinner! We missed Debbie, of course, but will look forward to getting the next book to her, and seeing her at our next meeting. I am so glad that The Brain That Changes Itself was so well received. I was sure it was going to fall flat, but knowing how open-minded, and thoroughly dedicated readers you all are, I should have known that you would mine gems of wisdom - no matter my own misgivings. It rated a 4.0!

The challenge is to find new ways of expanding our life experiences, and of course reading is one of our favorite ways. Chris chose our next book "The Hummingbird's Daughter", but Luis Alberto Urrea. We will meet at Claudia's on Wednesday, March 3.

I hope we can consider doing a small matching fund for our Summer Readers in connection with the incentive program I described at our last meeting. What if we were to contribute 10 cents for every hour read, and half would go to the Entiat Service Club, and half would go to Heifer International? I would estimate that the summer readers would likely read a total of about 1000 hours. That would mean that our contribution would equal $100 or $50 for each group. Split amongst 7 of us, that works out to a little more that $10.00 each.. Please comment or lets discuss this at our next meeting. Megan is also bringing up a similar proposal to the Entiat River Readers.

The Brain That Changes Itself

Finally! I chose a book and have copies available at the library.
It is a non-fiction book titled The Brain That Changes Itself, by Norman Doidge, M.D.

I hope you enjoy reading it. I am fascinated with our amazing brains - and it is an encouraging message to learn how well equipped they are to face and accomodate change, injury, and other life challenges.

Claudia has picked up her copy and I just sent a copy to Chris. I would like to have our next meeting on Wednesday the 19th at my house - if that works out for everyone. Gerry is out of town until sometime in January, so I hope that he checks in with me when he returns.

I think I will call each of you as well as post this message.

I was wondering if anyone would like to go the the musical "Grease" at the Town Toyota Center on January 16th. I thought it would be a fun group activity.

Thanks everyone who could make it. I hope I can go see the Basketry in Twisp, Claudia. Next gathering will probably be in late January depending on when we get Esther's selection.
